New Faces

Ball Caps

5" x 7" drawing pad, mechanical pencil. April 30, 2013. A set of four ball caps, hanging above a window in the new tavern we have been going to, to play darts. Oregon Beavers and Ducks hats.

Hand Sketching

5" x 7" drawing pad, mechanical pencil. April 7, 2013. Waiting in the car for Charlie, I was really bored, there wasn't anything interesting in the parking lot, so I drew what was in front of me. I really like the perspective.

Wonky Tree House

5" x 8" journal page, pencil sketch, watercolor paints, Pigma pen. April 3, 2012. From my original photo, that I took at Shasta Caverns, near Lake Shasta California. This was in the children's play area, the center of the tree was hollowed out and the house built on top. The door handle in a deer antler. All the wood and windows were skewed a bit, and the roof sagged too, giving it a real fun look. We just missed the noon boat to the cavern tour, the next wasn't until 2pm, so we did not wait to go on the tour. It looks like an amazing place to visit, we got postcards and a few goodies in the gift shop, and were on our way, returning to Oregon, from Spring Break.

Man Eating Yogurt

This man sitting on a bench having yogurt for breakfast, at OHSU Hospital in Portland Oregon. He sat still long enough, that I got a rough sketch and was able to refine it, and add details, so I am very happy with it.

Through the Mirror

This started as a picture of the faucet, but I made it too small. So then it included the mirror, the towel dispenser and the bed and window blinds on the "Other side"

Sky Tram

A pencil sketch from the "Sky Bridge" between the VA Hospital, and OHSU Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Looking out at the building holding the "Sky Tram" there were NO straight angles on the buildings. The building on the left leans out at a curve, and the sky tram tower was strange angles as well, with curved roads and freeways, the view over downtown Portland across the river and neighborhoods fading into snow capped mountains in the far distance. It was a challenge to sketch.

Beverly

A friend of ours, Beverly, she is a bartender at the Tavern and I work with her husband, driving bus. She has beautiful white flowing hair.

Stool and Lamp

Another drawing at the Tavern, the stool on the counter, with the lamp on it. Little bits and objects live on the stool, and the bartenders, play hide and seek with them, when they are bored.

Convex Mirror

5" x 7" drawing pad. Mechanical pencil. Dec. 13, 2012.

Drawing from my seat on the school bus, of the large round convex mirror on the front corner. It distorts the view a lot, especially the sidewalk, and the side of the bus. I look at this everyday, and it is amazing how much stuff I can see going on outside the bus.

Bar Glasses

Indian Maiden

Drawn from a wooden carving at the Tee Pee Tavern, an Indian maiden in a smooth blonde wood. I did not get her centered on the page right, and cut off the top of her head, pretend it is an old photograph, where people were always cutting the tops of heads off.

Reclineing Indian

Drawn from a 2 foot statue/sculpture above the bar at the Tee Pee Tavern. I was looking up at it for the perspective, and it was hard to see the detail. WOW, this is my one hundredth post! That didn't take long. Thank you everyone for looking at my art drawings and paintings.

Hawk

Every Day Matters #125 - draw a bird. Mechanical pencil, colored pencil. Nov. 3, 2012.

I was leery of doing this original photograph, it looked too complicated and finely detailed. I started with the eye and beak and got the proportion right, then added the feather areas. It really came to life when I decided I could smudge the pencil to create the gray tone, and give contrast to the white feathers around his face. There is one small yellow feather on his cheek, and rust on his shoulder. "Photograph taken at the Cascade Raptor Center, Eugene, Oregon. We visited last year with friends, and it was a great place. They rescue, rehab, and release raptors, eagles, hawks, osprey, owls and falcons. They also have birds too injured to release. You walk through a quiet woodland trails, the they have huge aviaries for individual birds. It is a peaceful place to be.

Rope

Every Day Matters #989 - Free Choice. 5" x 8" journal page. Mechanical pencil. Nov. 2, 2012.

From my original photograph, of a heavy sailing rope wrapped around a pylon. Mechanical pencil gave lots of detail and fine lines to the texture. I liked it so far, and got bored with it, so I stopped at this point.

Melissa's Purse

This is my co-worker Melissa's purse while we were sitting in McDonald's. I would have added the tessellated "T" pattern from the fabric, but she got up and left too soon.

Pooh and Pumpkin

Drawn at the Tee Pee tavern, a 12" tall ceramic decoration of Winnie the Pooh, in a pumpkin. It is orange with a red t-shirt, but I don't think I'll color him. He is just too cute.

Taps

Green Man

Journal page, 5" x 8" mechanical pencil, Sept. 8, 2012.

Sketched from my original photograph, taken in Oakland, Oregon of the historic buildings, in town. The posts framed a doorway and held up a wooden canopy over the door. I believe they are plaster, not carved wood as there are several of them on the facade. Next time I go back, I'll find out which building it was and the date it was built. All the buildings in downtown Oakland have plaques and dates on them. It was a challenge to draw the face as it was white on white, and only the shadows created the expression. I have been having fun with the Everyday Matters Challenges but I am also having fun drawing from my photographs, I'll have to print out some more for reference.
